With the generous support of the Board of Management, the school has purchased 5 sets of books, which has allowed for the successful roll out of the Literacy Lift Off programme.
Over 6 weeks, from September to October, first class pupils took part in the programme which is designed to increase each child’s competency in reading and writing. In small groups, children worked with the support teachers and special needs assistants for 45 minute blocks everyday.
During the Literacy Lift Off session, children worked through the stages of guided reading of both familiar and unfamiliar books, word work with magnetic letters, and writing.
New Reading: Pupils are given a new book everyday. After discussing the content of the book, and predicting what is happening in the story, children use strategies to read the new text.
Familiar Reading: Pupils re-read the book they read as new reading the day before. This is so children can develop fluency, comprehension, and most importantly an enjoyment for reading.
Writing: Pupils write a sentence based on their own news or an event in the story they have read. This develops children’s confidence in writing, through encouraging them to sound out words and learning the spelling of new words.
Word Work: Pupils develop phonics skills through making and breaking up words using magnetic letters.
Senior Infant children will take part in the programme after Christmas.
